His "evolution" on this issue is absurd. He knows damned well that "separate but equal" is never equal.

Principles over politics? The way I see it is this: if you can convince the voters, you can convince the politicians. I don't think it works the other way around.

It worked the other way around with the civil rights movement in the 50's and 60's. The Supreme Court was way ahead of public opinion, as were Johnson and the Congress when the civil rights and voting-rights laws were passed.
